Opera training grounded in performance
At Dallas College North Lake, Dr. José Miguel Santelices directs Opera Workshop and teaches applied voice. His work helps developing singers connect healthy vocal technique with character, text, movement, ensemble awareness and confident communication onstage.
The Opera Workshop welcomes students with varied levels of experience and builds practical skills through guided rehearsal, performance study and collaborative music-making.

FALL 2026
Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic
José Miguel’s 2026 international teaching includes masterclasses and workshops at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico (August) and Bellas Artes in the Dominican Republic (November), extending his work in vocal artistry, Hispanic repertoire, and international artistic exchange.
Earlier this year, he offered masterclasses, workshops, recitals, and individual one-on-one voice lessons at Tunghai University and Fuyang Normal University.
STAGE DIRECTION AND PRODUCTION
Manuel de Falla’s
El retablo de maese Pedro
José Miguel’s doctoral work at the University of Utah included the direction and production of Manuel de Falla’s El retablo de maese Pedro, the first Hispanic opera presented by the university. The project united scholarship, performance, design, production and advocacy for Spanish-language opera.
He welcomes conversations with colleges, universities, festivals and arts organizations seeking thoughtful direction, culturally grounded programming or collaborative Hispanic repertoire projects.

ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP
Colchagua Vocal Institute
Through the Santelices Foundation, José Miguel leads the Colchagua Vocal Institute, an intensive residential program in central Chile for emerging classical singers and collaborative pianists from across the Americas.
The institute combines advanced instruction, mentorship, performance, wellness, cultural immersion and community. Its international faculty model reflects José Miguel’s broader commitment to creating spaces where artists can grow, collaborate and belong.
